The Fiber Society is a non-profit professional and scientific organization dedicated to advancing knowledge of fibers, fiber-based products, and fibrous materials. Its members include chemists, physicists, engineers, designers, researchers, and students who share an interest in fiber science, engineering, and technology. The Society promotes research, collaboration, and the exchange of knowledge within the global fiber community.

The Society was founded in 1941 when Dr. K. L. Hertel of the University of Tennessee brought together a small group of textile physicists to discuss scientific challenges and opportunities in fiber research. Their successful two-day meeting led to the formation of the Industrial Fiber Society, which later became The Fiber Society. Since then, regular technical conferences have remained a key part of its mission.

Today, The Fiber Society supports education and innovation through lectureships, graduate student paper competitions, and the annual Founder’s Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to fiber science and technology. With an international membership from both academia and industry, the Society continues to expand and share knowledge while upholding the vision of its founders.
